Volunteers

“You never know which student in the class may be taking their very first steps toward a career in science.”
John Cox, CSN volunteer and Associate Professor, Mount Royal University.

CSN volunteerIs the Discovery Channel your favourite? Do you hate to miss an episode of NOVA or the Nature of Things? If you answered yes, you are the kind of person we would like to have as a volunteer!

CSN volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and bring a wealth of skills and expertise to our programs. The academic, government, business and non-profit sectors are well represented with a growing number of Professional Engineers thanks to our recent partnership with APEGGA. We have biologists, chemists, engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, physicists, physicians and many other specialists.

This year we have a high need for volunteers with knowledge in the biological sciences, but if that's not your area of expertise please contact us about other possible topics.

Our volunteers are enthusiastic members of the Calgary scientific community who actively support CSN's mission in a variety of roles such as:
  • Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom presenter
  • Teacher Workshop presenter
  • Science Fair judge
  • Career presenter
  • Special events volunteer
  • Resource person
  • Board member

Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom volunteers offer interactive presentations for most grade levels and topics in the Alberta science curriculum. Some examples are grade 6 "Evidence and Investigation" by a police officer, grade 1 "Seasonal Changes" from an environmental specialist and grade 2 "Hot and Cold Temperatures" by a Chemistry PhD candidate. The feedback from teachers and students in response to the scientist visit is overwhelmingly positive.

Many other volunteer opportunities are available in addition to classroom presenter positions. Science Fair judges provide support and objective feedback from the scientific community to budding scientists, Teacher Workshop presenters co-lead professional devleopment sessions for teachers and from time to time we need help at special events. All positions offer flexible hours to suit most schedules.
