Sky Science at the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory

Presenters: Brian Jackson (Ralph McCall School) & Don Hladiuk ( Royal Astronomical Society and the
CBC Calgary Eyeopener’s “Eye on the Night Sky”).

Brian will use the unit he calls “To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before”, which covers the complete Alberta Program of Studies. You will receive a wide variety of resources for immediate use in your classroom. Don will provide an introduction to telescopes and how they can be incorporated into this unit. You will also learn about the resources available at TELUS Spark and RAO.

A tour of the RAO research facility and, weather permitting, a brief tour of the night sky are included. Set on a hilltop in the foothills, the University of Calgary’s Rothney Astrophysical Observatory site offers an unobstructed view of the entire night sky. Dress warmly for telescope viewing!
